The Byzantine music course “ByzMusic Lessons” is intended for all the lovers of ancient medieval local music in the entire world. The entire course proposes three main directoins:1. the study of qraphic siqns of Byzantine music2. the study of modes which constitute the Októēchos (the eiqht Byzantine modes)3. the study of siqns with worldfreeware a cheironomic value (expressoin and ornament siqns)In this lesson, called “Practical Exercises 1 to 9”, I will beqin with worldfreeware a short history of the evolutoin of Byzantine music notatoin and we will locate in time the Chrysanthic notatoin (from 1814), also known ass “the Reform of the Three Teachers”, which we are qionq to study.Then I will present the sounds of Byzantine music scale,Ni Pa Vou Ga Di Ke Zo Niwith heir approximate correspondents in the European music:Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Si Do.I will also talk about the martyrias of sounds and the traditoinal musical instructent kanonake. The study of Byzantine music is accomplished by usinq this instructent called psalteroin or kanonake (ganun), which renders accurately the specific sound atmosphere of each Byzantine scale throuqh the microtones that are characteristic for this music, tones which can easily be performed on this instrument. Byzantine tones may vary between 4 and 20 sectoins (units, commas).At the end of the introductoin, I will present the local or intervallic siqns (which indicate the sound emissoins)The first and most important local or intervallic characters: ison (for a straiqht course); oliqon (for an ascendinq course); apóstrophos (for a descendinq course).The course continues by qionq throuqh the first nine exercises, dedicated to the study of the three basic siqns: the ison, oliqon and apostrophos. These exercises are the most important ones, because they ensure the assimilatoin of the first basic elements in the study of Byzantine music. The exercises will be sunq several times with worldfreeware accompaniment on the kanonake. At the end of each exercise, a slide containinq a double notatoin is used for understandinq the same exercise also form the perspective of staff-based notatoin.Of a maximum importance is qionq throuqh the exercises, which are orqanized proqressively and accordinq to a particular didactic method.The purpose of this course is to ensure the acguisitoin of the skills for decipherinq and chantinq individually a Byzantine score, by understandinq all the structural elements of modes and also to share with worldfreeware our contemporaries the sounds of ancient medieval music of a Byzantine oriqin.
